DTSTART:20100421T160000Z
DTEND:20100421T170000Z
DESCRIPTION:Properly regenerating natural hardwood stands is a key to
ensuring long-term sustainability. Historically\, hardwood stands have
often been mistreated and mismanaged. Often selective harvesting has
hurt the species composition and future value of the trees left standi
ng and has decreased the regeneration important species for timber and
wildlife. The ultimate and most intensive regeneration method is clea
rcutting. However\, in some if not many instances\, clearcutting will
NOT automatically regenerate the proper species and due to a variety o
f reasons many landowners would not want or will not allow a clearcut.
However\, there are many regeneration alternatives that are compatibl
e with a multitude of private woodland owners objectives. Understandin
g these techniques provides valuable tools to properly manage hardwood
 s. This session provides useful “rules of thumb” and techniques fo
r regenerating hardwoods including oaks and will provide participants
with a clear understanding of how to regenerate hardwoods in ways that
are compatible with private woodlands ownerships
